Privacy Policy

Effective Date: June 2026

1. Our Commitment to Privacy

Expenscan ("we," "our," or "us") is a receipt scanning application designed with your privacy as a foundational principle. All receipt scanning and data processing happens entirely on your device — we do not collect, upload, or transmit your data to any server.

By using Expenscan, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

2. Information We Collect

Expenscan is designed to operate with minimal data collection. Since all processing is on-device, we do not collect personal information such as your name, email address, phone number, or location.

The following describes the only data the application accesses:

  • Camera Feed: With your permission, Expenscan accesses your device's camera to scan receipt images. The camera feed is processed in real-time on your device using ML Kit for optical character recognition (OCR). No images or video frames are uploaded, stored, or transmitted off your device.
  • Receipt Data: Scanned receipt information (merchant name, items, prices, dates) is stored locally on your device in an internal Room database. This data never leaves your device.
  • Device Storage (Optional): When you choose to export or import CSV files, Expenscan accesses your device's file system to read or write the file. This is initiated only by your explicit action.

3. How We Use Information

All data captured by Expenscan is used exclusively to provide the core functionality of the application:

  • Scanning receipts via the device camera using on-device OCR
  • Displaying your spending history organized by category and time period
  • Exporting your data to CSV format when you explicitly request it
  • Importing data from CSV files when you explicitly request it

We do not use any data for advertising, profiling, analytics, or any purpose beyond what is necessary to operate the app. We do not share data with third parties.

4. Camera Permission

Expenscan requires camera access to scan receipts. This permission is requested at runtime on Android 6.0+ and can be revoked at any time through your device's system settings.

When camera permission is denied, the scanning feature will be unavailable, but you can still view and manage previously scanned data.

5. Data Storage & Deletion

All Expenscan data is stored locally on your device in an internal SQLite database (Room). You have full control over your data:

  • Delete individual receipts: You can delete individual receipts within the app.
  • Clear all data: You can uninstall the application, which removes all associated data from your device.
  • App data management: You can clear app data through your device's system settings (Settings → Apps → Expenscan → Storage → Clear data).

Since Expenscan does not operate any servers, no data exists outside your device. There is no account to delete, and no data to request removal of from our systems.

6. Children's Privacy

Expenscan is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.

7. Third-Party Services

Expenscan uses the following third-party libraries, all of which operate fully on-device and do not transmit data:

  • Google ML Kit Text Recognition: On-device OCR — no data sent to Google servers
  • CameraX: Android camera API — no network access
  • Room: Local SQLite database — no network access

No third-party service used by Expenscan has access to your data.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. Material changes will be indicated by an updated "Effective Date" at the top of this page. Your continued use of the application after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
